Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin noctivagat-, noctivagare.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin noctivagat-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of noctivagare to wander at night (from 1326 in British sources; 15th cent. in sources relating to the University of Oxford: see quot. 1965) < classical Latin nocti- nocti- comb. form + vagārī to wander (see vagant adj.), after noctivagus (see noctivagous adj.). Compare earlier noctivagant adj., noctivagant n., noctivagating n., noctivagation n.
rare.
intransitive. To wander or roam about at night.
