Etymology: < post-classical Latin non compos mentis not master of one's mind (from 13th cent. in British sources, usually in non fuit compos mentis suae ‘he (or she) was not of sound mind’, and variants) < classical Latin nōn not (see non- prefix) + compos mentis compos mentis adj.
