Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French nombril, nomblil.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French nombril the navel (c1170 in Old French; 1581 in heraldry), variant (with dissimilation of -l- to -r- ) of Anglo-Norman and Old French nomblil (1155) < a post-classical Latin derivative of classical Latin umbilīcus umbilic n. with attraction of n from the indefinite article in French (compare also Old French lonbril with attraction of l from the definite article).
1. Heraldry. More fully nombril point: the point on an escutcheon which lies midway between the true centre (or fess point) and the base point. Cf. navel point n. at navel n. Compounds 2. Now chiefly literary and historical.
