1819 P. Nicholson Archit. Dict. II. 399/2 Nidged Ashlar, a kind of ashlar used in Aberdeen, which is brought to the square by means of a cavil, or hammer, with a sharp point.
1842 J. Gwilt Encycl. Archit. ii. iii. 519 In Aberdeen, where the stone is very hard..they pick the stone until the surface has nearly acquired the requisite form. This sort of work is called nidged-work.
1875 E. H. Knight Amer. Mech. Dict. II. 1526/2 Nidged, nigged; as ashlar.
1951 Engineering 6 Apr. 401/2 The [road-paving] setts were of the nidged type..and the nidged surface had been..worn away.
