Etymology: < ind- (in indigo n.) + -in suffix1, after French indine (A. Laurent 1841, in Ann. de chimie et de physique 3 471). N.E.D. (1900) gives the pronunciation as (i·ndin) /ˈɪndɪn/.
Chemistry. Obsolete.
A rose-coloured crystalline substance obtained by the alkaline hydrolysis of a sulphonated derivative of indigo.Said to have the formula C16H10N2O2; perhaps a dimeric derivative of isatin.Also as the second element of names of substituted compounds, as hydrindin, nitrindin, etc. Cf. flavindin n.

1859 H. Watts tr. L. Gmelin Hand-bk. Chem. XIII. 90 When hydrindin is carefully heated above 300°, it turns violet-brown and gives off 4 atoms of water.
1862 W. A. Miller Elements Chem. (ed. 2) III. 624 Nitrindin C32H8(NO4)2N2O4, chlorindin (C32H8Cl2N2O4), and dichlorindin (C32H6Cl4N2O4) are substitution compounds obtainable from indin.
1889 H. E. Roscoe & C. Schorlemmer Treat. Chem. III. v. 97 When indin is treated with concentrated alcoholic potash, it yields the potassium salt of indic acid,..decomposed by water with formation of the original indin.
