Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a French lexical item, and partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Nerita n., -ine suffix4.
Etymology: < Nerita n. + -ine suffix4, after French néritine (1809) and scientific Latin Neritina (1816). Compare also scientific Latin Neritinae, subfamily name (1840).
Zoology. rare.
Any nerite of the genus Neritina and several closely related genera, especially Theodoxus and Clithon, of the family Neritidae (sometimes included in a subfamily Neritinae), the members of which usually inhabit fresh or brackish water. Also attributive or as adj.

1874 J. G. Wood Out of Doors 639 Several allied shells are inhabitants of the fresh instead of the salt waters, and are known as Neritines.
1976 Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) B. 275 427 Most other neritine snails are tropical animals except the genus Theodoxus which is found in the temperate zone.
