Etymology: < French Niçois (1855 or earlier in sense A. 1) < the name of the city of Nice (see Nice n.2) + -ois (see -ese suffix). Compare earlier Nissard n.The form Nicoise in quot. 1992 at sense B. probably results from confusion with Niçoise adj. and n.
