Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Moldawit.
Etymology: < German Moldawit (F. X. M. Zippe 1837, in Abhandl. Böhm. Ges. Wissensch. 4 26) < Moldau , the name in German of the Vltava River in the Czech Republic + -it -ite suffix1.The Czech word for the substance is moldavit or vltavín.
Geology.
The substance, resembling obsidian, of which tektites from the strewn field of Bohemia and Moravia in the Czech Republic are composed. Also: a tektite from this strewn field.
