Etymology: < nephro- comb. form + toxin n., after French néphrotoxine (E. Metchnikoff 1900, in Ann. de l'Inst. Pasteur 14 372). Compare nephrotoxic adj.
Medicine.
Originally: an antiserum produced by the injection of kidney tissue from one species into animals of another species, which causes kidney disease when reinjected into the donor species; (also) any antibody or autoantibody associated with kidney disease (now historical or disused). Later: any drug or other substance that is toxic to the kidneys.
