Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French népenthe; Latin nēpenthes.
Etymology: < French népenthe a drug or potion supposed to bring relief from sorrow (mid 16th cent. in Middle French), a plant known to the ancients yielding this drug (1605), also in specific use in botany (1825; 1795 as népente in this sense) or its etymon classical Latin nēpenthes nepenthes n. Compare Italian nepente (a1600). Compare earlier nepenthe n., nepenthes n.Some of the early examples of the form nepenthe given at nepenthe n. may rather represent pronunciations without post-tonic /i/ and therefore belong here.
Obsolete. rare.
A drink, potion, or drug that brings, or is reputed to bring, forgetfulness of trouble or grief, or that has anaesthetic properties. Cf. nepenthe n. 1a, 1b.

Etymology: Shortened < scientific Latin Nepenthaceae, family name (see quot. 18461) < Nepenthes , genus name (see nepenthes n. 2) + -aceae (see -aceous suffix). Compare earlier nepenth n.1, nepenthe n., nepenthes n.
Botany. Obsolete. rare.
J. Lindley's name for: any plant of the family Nepenthaceae.
