Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: neo- comb. form, thalamus n.
Etymology: < neo- comb. form + thalamus n., after German Neothalamus (L. Edinger Vorlesungen über den Bau der Nervösen Zentralorgane des Menschen u. der Tiere (ed. 7) (1908) II. xv. 234). Compare slightly earlier neothalamic adj.
Anatomy.
The lateral part of the thalamus, which projects to the neocortex and is most highly developed in primates.
