Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Spanish lexical item. Etymons: neo- comb. form, Puerto Rican adj.
Etymology: < neo- comb. form + Rican (in Puerto Rican adj.), after American Spanish neorriqueño (1964 as adjective in the title of a work by J. Carrero), blend of neoyorquino (adjective) from New York (see Newyorican n.) and puertorriqueño (adjective) Puerto Rican (see Puerto Rican n. and adj.). Compare American Spanish neorican, noun and adjective (1989 or earlier), neoricano, adjective (1987 or earlier).
