Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: ab- prefix, junction n.
Etymology: < ab- prefix + junction n., after German Abgliederung (1884 in specific mycological sense, in the passage translated in quot. 1887). Compare post-classical Latin abiunctio separation (16th cent.; earlier (1132) in sense ‘disconnection’, in grammar).
Botany. Now rare.
The separation of spores or conidia from the hyphae of certain fungi by the formation of septa.
