Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Nemocera , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Nemocera (P. A. Latreille in Nouveau dictionnaire d'histoire naturelle (1817) X. 288; irregularly < ancient Greek νῆμα thread (see nemato- comb. form) + κέρας horn: see kerato- comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare French némocères, plural noun (P. A. Latreille in Cuvier Règne Animal (1817) III. 594).
Entomology. Now rare.
Belonging or relating to the group Nemocera (now the suborder Nematocera) of dipteran flies; nematoceran, nematocerous.
