Etymology: < neuron n. + -o- connective + -phagia comb. form, after French neuronophage cell that phagocytoses neurons (G. Marinesco 1896, in Comptes Rendus de la Soc. de Biol. 48 991).
Medicine.
The phagocytosis of (damaged) neurons.
