Etymology: < the name of William Neile, English mathematician (1637–70), who rectified such a parabola in 1657 + -ian suffix.The surname Neile has in many later sources been respelt as Neil. Neile's method of computing the arc of the semicubical parabola was published by John Wallis in 1659 ( Tractatus Duo 91).
