[coined by William Whewell (see quot. 1833 at main sense)] the hypothesis (originally propounded by Kant in 1755 and elaborated by Herschel and Laplace) that the solar system originated as a diffuse rotating cloud of gas which under its own gravitational attraction contracted into a flattened disc from which the planets condensed (now viewed as the most likely origin of the solar system and other star systems).
