Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin negōtiālis.
Etymology: < classical Latin negōtiālis concerned with affairs (see note) < negōtium (see negotiate v.) + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare Middle French negocial relating to commerce (1525).Only in Leonard Cox's Arte Rhethorycke (?1529), a work based on Melanchthon's Institutiones Rhetoricæ (1522). In Cicero, negōtiālis is opposed to iūridiciālis (see juridicial adj.); compare quot. 15322. In Quintilian, negōtiālis translates Hellenistic Greek πραγματικός pragmatic adj.
Obsolete. rare.
