Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi naṭkhaṭ.
Etymology: < Hindi naṭkhaṭ, perhaps < Sanskrit naṭa (in vernacular form also naṛ ) mountebank (see Nataraja n., Nat n.2) + Hindi khaṭ noise of rattling, knocking, etc. (compare khaṭiyā noisy or fidgety person). Compare Nataraja n.

A rogue, a rascal. Also as adj.: roguish, mischievous.
