单词 negannepaut
释义

negannepautn.

Brit. /nᵻˈɡanəˌpaʊt/, U.S. /nəˈɡænəˌpaʊt/
Forms: 1700s negampant, 1700s neganepant, 1700s neganipant, 1700s negannepant, 1900s– negannepaut (historical).
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably a borrowing from Bengali. Etymon: Bengali *nigam-pāt.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Probably < unattested Bengali *nigam-pāt (or a similar compound in a vernacular South Asian language) < nigam , vernacular South Asian pronunciation of Sanskrit nigama (see nicanee n.) + Bengali pāt length of cloth (also in this sense in other vernacular South Asian languages; < Sanskrit pattra leaf, sheet). Compare earlier nicanee n.This is one of a group of several Indian fabrics mentioned in 17th- and 18th-cent. sources whose names are of uncertain origin; compare Chello n., tapseil n. Most of the forms recorded probably represent transcription from speech and subsequent miscopying. The following quot. probably shows a misreading of -paut as -pacel in the same word:1748 W. Wood Let. 26 Apr. in G. Hampson Portsmouth Customs Let. Bks. (1994) 10 To export to Affrica One hundred fifty Niccanees, two hundred Byrampauts four hundred Brawley Eighty Neganepacels two hundred forty Chelloes.
Now historical and rare.
A kind of coarse cotton fabric formerly imported from India as piece goods; a length of this.
