Etymology: < hyper- prefix + drive n.; perhaps suggested by hyperspace, overdrive.
Science Fiction.
A fictitious device by which a spaceship is enabled to travel from one point to another in a shorter time than light would take (usually by passing out of ordinary space into ‘hyperspace’ for the journey); also, the state of so travelling.
