Etymology: Shortened < navigator n. Eng. Dial. Dict. s.v. also records navvy from northern and midland English counties as a shortened form of navigation n. with the sense ‘an artificial waterway; a canal’.
1. A construction worker; spec. a labourer employed in the construction of (originally) a canal, (now frequently) a road, railway, etc. Cf. navigator n. 2a and navigation n. 6.
