Origin: Formed within English, by compounding, partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: ambi- prefix, -genous comb. form.

Etymology: < ambi- prefix + -genous comb. form, at least partly after post-classical Latin ambigenus hybrid (12th cent. in a British source), (in geometry) designating a specific kind of curve ( I. Newton Enumeratio linearum tertii ordinis 6 in Optice (1706)).Specific senses. The author of quot. 1763 at sense 1 claims (in a footnote) to have coined the English word. In quot. 1879 at sense 1 with reference to a scientific Latin use of ambigenus , designating a type of calyx: C. F. Brisseau de Mirbel Élémens de physiol. végétale et de bot. II. (1815) 725. With sense 2 compare earlier ambigenal adj., and also French ambigène (1751 in geometry).
