Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French naffe.

Etymology: < French naffe (1478 in Middle French in eaue naffe; 1534 in Rabelais as eau de naphe, 1545 in a translation of Boccaccio as eau de naffe) < Arabic nafḥa fragrance diffused by the scent of a flower, etc. ( < nafaḥa to exhale a pleasant odour), perhaps via post-classical Latin aqua nanfa (1156 in an Italian source), Italian acqua nanfa (1353 in Boccaccio; 1352 as lamfa), Catalan aygo nafa (1429 in a translation of Boccaccio), or Spanish aguanafa (1469 as augua naffra).It has been suggested that Spanish aguanafa perhaps represents a partial translation of Hispano-Arabic mā' al-nafḥa scented water < mā' water + al- the + nafḥa (compare Arabic mā' al-ward rose-water < mā' + al- + ward rose: see bedeguar n.), but further evidence of Arabic mā' al-nafḥa is lacking.
