单词 make-belief
释义

make-beliefn.

Brit. /ˈmeɪkbᵻliːf/, U.S. /ˈmeɪkbəˈˌlif/, /ˈmeɪkbiˈˌlif/
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: make-believe n.
Etymology: Variant of make-believe n., after belief n. N.E.D. (1904) notes that ‘the formation of the latter [i.e. make-believe], being misunderstood, was imagined to be incorrect’; however, the wider pattern of nouns and adjectives ending in voiceless fricatives corresponding to verbs ending in voiced fricatives (e.g., safe:save, strife:strive, etc., alongside belief:believe) probably also exerted some influence.
Make-believe, pretence.
