Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Nauplius.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Nauplius, former genus name (O. F. Müller Entomostraca seu Insecta Testacea (1785) 39: see note below) < classical Latin nauplius argonaut (paper nautilus) < ancient Greek ναύπλιος a kind of shellfish. Compare classical Latin Nauplius, the name of a mythological king of Euboea ( < ancient Greek Ναύπλιος, the name of a son of Poseidon). Compare French †nauplie (1846), nauplius (1890).
Zoology.
The free-swimming larval stage in many crustaceans, characterized by an unsegmented body with a dorsal shield, three pairs of appendages, and a single median eye; a larva in this stage. Frequently attributive.These larvae were at first mistakenly thought to represent a distinct genus, for which the name was introduced by O. F. Müller: see quot. 1836.
