Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by conversion. Etymon: nobby adj.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < nobby adj., with reference to the trim appearance of such boats (see e.g. quot. 1959). Compare nobby n.3
Chiefly Scottish. Now rare.
A type of sailing boat used in Scotland, traditionally having a raking mast, a lugsail, and a jib. Cf. nobby n.3Associated chiefly with herring fishing on Loch Fyne and in the Firth of Clyde.
