Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Montivilliers.
Etymology: < the name of the town in Normandy now called Montivilliers. Compare muster n.2The place name (in post-classical Latin Villare (8th cent.), Monasterium quod dicitur Villare , Villaris Monasterii (both 11th cent.)) appears in J. Coke Debate Heraldes Eng. & Fraunce (1550) §108 as Musterdevillers , and in 15th-cent. documents cited in Gairdner's 1896 ed. of the Paston Letters as Moustervillers and Mustirvilers (I. pp. lxxix and 8 respectively). Many forms of the English word show influence of other words, especially muster n.1, mustard n., and devil n.
Obsolete.
A kind of mixed grey woollen cloth much used in the 14th and 15th centuries. Also: the colour of this cloth.
