Etymology: < scientific Latin Mylodontidae, family name (F. Ameghino in Contribución al conocimento de los mamiferos fosiles de la Républica Argentina (1889) I. 665; compare earlier Mylodontinae (T. Gill 1872, in Smithsonian Misc. Coll. 11 § i. 24)) < Mylodont- (see mylodont n. and adj.) + -idae (see -id suffix³).
