Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: myelo- comb. form, -oma comb. form.
Etymology: < myelo- comb. form + -oma comb. form. Compare French myélome (1868; recorded also earlier by R. G. Mayne (see quot. 1857) in form myélôme).
Pathology.
Originally: †a medullary or encephaloid tumour (see medullary adj. 3) (obsolete rare). Later: a tumour of the medullary cavity of bone, or of bone marrow cells; a giant cell tumour of bone or tendon sheath (disused). Now: spec. multiple myeloma (see multiple myeloma n.); any of the plasma cell tumours characteristic of this. Cf. myelomatosis n.
