Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from German. Partly formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: German Myelodysplasie ; myelo- comb. form, dysplasia n.
Etymology: In sense 1 < German Myelodysplasie (A. Fuchs 1909, in Wiener med. Wochenschr. 59 2141). In sense 2 independently < myelo- comb. form + dysplasia n.
Medicine.
1. Abnormal development of the spinal cord, esp. in the lumbar or lumbo-sacral region.

2. Abnormal development of one or more types of blood cell (erythrocytes, leukocytes, or thrombocytes); any of a group of disorders characterized by this, presenting with anaemia, leukopenia, or thrombocytopenia (or any combination of these), and sometimes progressing to acute myeloid leukaemia.
