Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sub dīō.
Etymology: < classical Latin sub dīō in the open air < sub under (see sub- prefix) + dīō , ablative of dīum open sky, use as noun of neuter of dīus having the brightness of day, radiant, divine < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit divya divine, celestial, beautiful, ancient Greek δῖος (see Diosma n.). Compare subdial adj.
