Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Mysticeti, mysticetus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Mysticeti (valid publication E. D. Cope 1891; compare Cope's earlier use in quot. 1890), plural of mysticetus (see mysticete n.1). Compare mystacocete n., Mysticete n.2
Zoology.
The suborder of cetaceans comprising the baleen or whalebone whales; (with plural agreement) whales of this suborder collectively.

1890 E. D. Cope in Amer. Naturalist 24 600 The Mysticeti feed on minute Crustacea and Mollusca, which they retain in the mouth by straining the water through their bristly whalebone, or baleen.
