Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese mushin.
Etymology: < Japanese mushin no-mindedness, unfeelingness (9th cent.; 13th cent. in Buddhist use; 1603 as muxin in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam) < Middle Chinese. Compare mu n.3, no-mind n. at no adj. Compounds 4.
Buddhism and Martial Arts.
A state, usually achieved through meditation, in which the conscious mind is not felt to be separate from physical and unconscious experience. Also (in extended use in Japanese literature): a style of writing lacking emotion or aesthetic reference.
