Etymology: < Dutch muselaar, muzelaar (16th cent.; also in Middle Dutch in form moeselaer in sense ‘bagpiper’ < moesel , musele (Dutch moezel , Dutch regional (West Flanders) muzel , muizel ) kind of bagpipe < Old French musele (12th cent.; < muse muse n.² + -ele -el suffix²; compare musette n.) + -aer -er suffix¹).The application of this name to the virginal seems to be due to the distinctive sound, reminiscent of a wind instrument, which is produced as a result of the position of its keyboard. In quot. 1965 Hubbard refers to Claas Douwes (c1650–1725), Dutch writer, organist, and schoolmaster, whose Grondig Ondersoek van de Toonen der Musijk (1699) is an important source for those who study, and construct, keyboard instruments.
