Amer. Oct. e5/1 (advt.) Siemens, for example, is pioneering teletex which is a synthesis of the typewriter and teleprinter and is the first step towards full-scale electronic mail. 1993 A. Puccio in S. Tirró Satellite Communication Syst. Design iv. 130 Teletex allows character transmission at 2400 b/s, so transmission time is significantly reduced compared with telex. 2003 A. A. Huurdeman Worldwide Hist. Telecommunications xxx. 512 Teletex was no success, however. It was introduced in 1982 in Germany, where even at its peak in 1988 it had only 19,000 subscribers.
