Origin: Apparently a borrowing from German. Etymon: German Teletex.
Etymology: Apparently < German Teletex (1978 or earlier), probably a blend of Telex telex n. and Text text n.1In the following earlier quot. probably an error for telex n. 1: 1968 Richardson (Texas) Daily News 3 May 2/5 Dallas Public Library put the request from the Richardson Public Library on the Teletex Machine to the Texas State Library.
Telecommunications. Now chiefly historical.
A system in which electronic text and documents are transmitted and received by computers over telephone lines, designed to be a faster and more versatile alternative to telex; cf. telex n. 1.

1978 New Scientist 7 Dec. 770/2 Communicating word processing—or ‘teletex’—adds the vital element of data editing and storage to the more basic idea of facsimile.
1981 Sci. Amer. Oct. e5/1 (advt.) Siemens, for example, is pioneering teletex which is a synthesis of the typewriter and teleprinter and is the first step towards full-scale electronic mail.
1993 A. Puccio in S. Tirró Satellite Communication Syst. Design iv. 130 Teletex allows character transmission at 2400 b/s, so transmission time is significantly reduced compared with telex.
2003 A. A. Huurdeman Worldwide Hist. Telecommunications xxx. 512 Teletex was no success, however. It was introduced in 1982 in Germany, where even at its peak in 1988 it had only 19,000 subscribers.
