单词 muscadel
释义

muscadeln.

Brit. /mʌskəˈdɛl/, U.S. /ˌməskəˈdɛl/, South African English /mʌskəˈdel/
Forms: late Middle English muskadelle, late Middle English 1800s muscadelle, late Middle English–1500s muskedell, late Middle English–1500s mustadell (probably transmission error), late Middle English–1600s muskadel, late Middle English–1600s muskadell, late Middle English–1700s muscadell, late Middle English– muscadel, 1500s mosscadell, 1500s muscadle, 1500s muscadyll, 1500s muskadyll, 1500s muskedele, 1600s muscadall; Scottish pre-1700 muscadall, pre-1700 muscadell, pre-1700 muskedall, pre-1700 1700s– muscadel.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Apparently partly a borrowing from Occitan. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Occitan muscadel; French muscadel.
Etymology: In early use apparently < Old Occitan muscadel (14th cent. in senses 1 and 2) < muscat (see muscat n.) + -el -el suffix2; in later use reinforced by Middle French muscadel (16th cent. in senses 1 and 2) < Old Occitan. In sense 3 after Middle French muscadelle (1544; 1528 as adjective in poyres muscatelles (plural); also in an isolated use denoting a grape variety) or its etymon Old Occitan muscadela < muscat (see muscat n.) + -ela (see -ella suffix). Compare post-classical Latin muscadellum (1345 in an isolated attestation in sense 1). Compare Muscadelle n., muscatel n., muscadine n.1The predominance of muscadel over muscatel in South African English (see senses 1 and 2) is probably due to the influence of Dutch and Afrikaans muskadel.
1. = muscatel n. 1. More fully muscadel wine. Now chiefly South African. The name muscadel is more commonly used in South Africa than muscatel for wines made from muscat grapes (see note at sense 2). Such wines are usually sweet white dessert wines, though they may be red and are now often fortified.
