Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: free adj., association n.
Etymology: < free adj. + association n. In sense 1 after French association libre (1755 in the passage translated in quot. 1761). With sense 2 compare German freier Einfall (1914 in Freud in the passage translated in quot. 1953).
1. A voluntary association of free individuals; the freedom to form such an association or to socialize with others, esp. regarded as a right. Also: a confederation of states, etc., which retain their sovereignty.
