1877 H. Watts Dict. Chem. IV. 746 He [sc. Prout] regarded the colourless substance which is separated from purpurate of ammonium by strong acids (murexan) as purpuric acid. Liebig and Wöhler..showed that Prout's purpuric acid did not possess the property of forming coloured salts, and so could not be considered as the acid of the purpurates.

1937 Thorpe's Dict. Appl. Chem. (ed. 4) I. 628/2 Uramil (murexan)..was originally prepared by boiling alloxantin with ammonium chloride or ammonium thionurate with hydrochloric acid (Liebig and Wöhler).
