Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; probably modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: mute adj., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < mute adj. + -ism suffix, probably after French mutisme condition of a person who is mute (1741; 1883 in medical use), attitude of a person who chooses not to speak (1801).In sense 2 after German elektiver Mutismus (M. Tramer 1934, in Zeitschr. f. Kinderpsychiatrie 1 30).
1. The state or condition of being mute or silent; refusal to speak; inability or failure to produce normal speech or vocalizations, esp. as a result of physical or mental disability or illness. Also figurative.
