释义

Muhammadn.

Brit. /mᵿˈhamᵻd/, U.S. /moʊˈhɑməd/, /məˈhɑməd/, /moʊˈhæməd/, /məˈhæməd/
Forms:

α. 1600s Mahumed, 1800s Mahomed, 1800s Mahommed.

β. 1600s– Mohammed, 1900s– Mohamed.

γ. 1700s Muhammed, 1800s– Muhammad.

Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Muḥammad.
Etymology: < Muḥammad, the Arabic form of the name of the Arab prophet (see main sense). Compare slightly earlier Mohammedry n., Mohammedism n., and also earlier Mahomet n. (see below). The α. forms reflect popular and regional forms of the Arabic name (see discussion s.v. Mahomet n.). Historically, the most widely used spelling in English contexts has been Mohammed ; this spelling continues to predominate in the derivatives Mohammedan n. and adj., etc. The spelling Muhammad is now commonly used, especially in scholarly writings, as being closest to the form of the name in Arabic. Forms with final -t , which follow the early European tradition, are placed under Mahomet n.
(The name of) the Arab prophet through whom the Qur'an was revealed and the religion of Islam established (c570–632).In c610 in Mecca Muhammad received the first of a series of revelations which, as the Qur'an, became the doctrinal and legislative basis of Islam. In the face of opposition to his preaching, he and his small group of supporters were forced to flee to Medina in 622 (the Hijra). He led his followers into a series of battles against the Meccans. In 630 Mecca capitulated, and by the time of his death he had united most of Arabia.
