Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Mozambique.
Etymology: < Mozambique (Portuguese Moçambique), the name of a country (formerly a Portuguese colony) on the east coast of southern Africa.The place name Mozambique is attested in English from the early seventeenth century (1604 as Mosambique, 1634 as Mozambique). It is not clear why the fabric is so called.
Now chiefly historical.
Any of various kinds of lightweight mixed-fibre fabrics used in dressmaking; esp. a kind of grenadine.
