Etymology: < classical Latin myrris, myrrhis an aromatic umbellifer, perhaps specifically Myrrhis odorata (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek μυρρίς (also μυρίς ) < μύρρα myrrh n.¹ + -ις (see -id suffix²). Compare Middle French herbe myrrhys (1562 in Du Pinet's translation of Pliny; compare quot. 1601), French myrrhis (1671).Pliny also gives classical Latin myrris, myrrhis as a synonym for geranion geranium, but this probably results from a misunderstanding. N.E.D. (1908) also gives the pronunciation (mi·ris) /ˈmɪrɪs/.
