Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Munro.
Etymology: < the name of Sir Hugh Thomas Munro (1856–1919), Scottish mountaineer, who published a list of all such peaks in the first volume of the Journal of the Scottish Mountaineering Club in 1891.
Mountaineering.
Any Scottish mountain that is at least 3,000 feet high (approx. 914 metres). Also sometimes in extended use, applied to mountains elsewhere that are above the specified height (e.g. see quot. 1978).The 1997 revision of the list of Munros describes 284 such peaks. A further 511 Tops (land over 3,000 feet not constituting a separate peak) are also catalogued.
