Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: muff n.1, -y suffix6.
Etymology: Probably < muff n.1 (compare sense 3c and see discussion at that entry) + -y suffix6, with insertion of -t- perhaps after tufty adj. Compare earlier muffed adj.1With sense 2 compare earlier muff n.4, and also muffit n. Trisyllabic forms are perhaps after muffit n.
British regional. Now rare.
1. Scottish. A fowl having a crest of feathers on the head. Cf. muff n.1 3c. Obsolete.
