Compare earlier mufty n., (denoting the long-tailed tit) later muffler n. 5a, ragamuffin n. 3, and perhaps also (denoting the whitethroat) earlier muff n.⁴, slightly later muffit n. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mɒ·flin) /ˈmʌflɪn/.
