单词 mufflin
释义

mufflinn.

Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: muff n.1, English -lin.
Etymology: Probably < muff n.1 (compare sense 3c and see note at that entry) + -lin, diminutive suffix (compare -ling suffix1), perhaps with reference to the bird's distinctive striped crown feathers. Compare earlier mufty n., (denoting the long-tailed tit) later muffler n. 5a, ragamuffin n. 3, and perhaps also (denoting the whitethroat) earlier muff n.4, slightly later muffit n. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (mɒ·flin) /ˈmʌflɪn/.
British regional. Obsolete.
The long-tailed tit, Aegithalos caudatus. Cf. muffler n. 5a.
