Origin: A borrowing from Dutch, combined with English elements. Etymons: Dutch muushont , mouse n., hunt n.1
Etymology: In quot. 1481 at sense 1 < Middle Dutch muushont weasel (1271–2; Dutch muishond ) < muus mouse n. + hont dog (see hound n.1); apparently subsequently altered after hunt n.1, unless later use shows an independent formation < mouse n. + hunt n.1 (perhaps compare the personal name Rogerus Mushunte (1162)); in form mouse-hound (see quot. 1847 at sense 1) showing alteration after hound n.1 In sense 2 after South African Dutch, Afrikaans muishond muishond n. Compare Middle Low German mūshunt, Middle High German mūshunt (German Maushund), Swedish mushund, all apparently denoting cats.
1. Chiefly English regional (southern). An animal that hunts mice; spec. a weasel, a small stoat. Now historical.In quot. 1597 with punning allusion to mouse n. 3a.In quot. 1854 perhaps: a female weasel, which is half the size of the male, mistakenly identified as a separate species.
