单词 mountain lark
释义

mountain larkn.

Brit. /ˌmaʊntᵻn ˈlɑːk/, U.S. /ˈmaʊnt(ə)n ˌlɑrk/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: mountain n., lark n.1
Etymology: < mountain n. + lark n.1 In the sense ‘skylark’, apparently as alteration of mounting lark at mounting adj. 1a, which is frequent in poetic use from late 16th cent. (compare quot. 1731). (Quot. 1883 appears, however, to be in error in suggesting use by Milton.)
Originally chiefly poetic: a songbird associated with upland districts, esp. the skylark ( Alauda arvensis). Now also: spec. (U.S. regional) the white-throated sparrow, Zonotrichia albicollis (family Emberizidae).Larks have no particular association with mountainous country, and the meadow pipit ( Anthus pratensis) might perhaps be a better candidate for the name. However, there is no evidence that it has ever been so called in regional English (despite the statement in quot. 1971).
