Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: most adj., -est suffix.
Etymology: < most adj. + -est suffix.Originally as a double or strengthened superlative in dialect use in Britain and (especially southern) United States, the latter probably accounting for the usage attributed to the Confederate cavalry commander, Nathan Bedford Forrest (1821–77), in allusion to which the adjective and noun are still frequently used. Forrest is most commonly quoted in this form: ‘Git thar fustest with the mostest men’, but compare quot. 1905 at sense A. 1. Compare also sense B. 1. Compare leastest adj., leastest n.
Originally regional. Now chiefly humorous.
