Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese mordexim.
Etymology: < Portuguese mordexim (1563; 1543 in form moryxy ; also 16th cent. in form morxi ) < Marathi moḍaśī (also moḍśī , moḍvaśī ) cholera < Kannada muḍugu to contract (compare Marathi muḍguśī contraction of the body), assimilated to Marathi moḍṇẽ to break up. Compare mort-de-chien n.In form mordexijn in quot. 1598 after Dutch mordexijn (1596 in the passage translated).
